Johnny Chan

More often than not, one hears about American poker players who made it big in the Vegas poker casinos, but it is wonderful to note that a player with Asian roots has also made a big name in this industry. This is none other than Johnny Chan who was born in the populous Guangzhou, China on 1957. In 1962, Chan and his family moved to Hong Kong and again in 1968 to Phoenix, Arizona. Five years later, they moved to Houston, Texas where they owned restaurants. The expectation was that he would lead the family business, but he got his first taste of casino gaming in Las Vegas Nevada at the age of 16. By age 21, he did not finish his Hotel and Restaurant Management course in the University of Houston to finally take up professional poker.

String of Successes

Johnny Chan started his ascent to poker fame in the latter part of 1980s. He won the championship event at the World Series of Poker for two consecutive years in 1987 to 1988. His third title came when he placed second to Phil Hellmuth in the same world renowned tournament. His consecutive wins in WSOP Main Events remains unmatched, and it may be harder to get another player to match this feat since the player field is starting to get bigger and bigger than ever. Still active in professional poker in 2005, he became the first one to gain 10 WSOP titles after beating Phil Laak in a Holdem event. Going back 3 years earlier in 2002, he got inducted to the Poker Hall of Fame. Up until 2008, Johnny Chan has won no less than $4.1 million from events at World Series of Poker.

Other Interests

Johnny Chan has not let his experience on running businesses go. He also owns a franchise of a fast food in Las Vegas Stratosphere Hotel. He continues to act as a consultant for a number of game makers and casinos, and he still dreams of opening his own casino. The Card Player, a magazine, has published some of his works, while he had also appeared in the initial season of High Stakes Poker. He also collaborated on an instructional book about various poker types through “Play Poker Like Johnny Chan” in 2005 and published a follow up in late 2006 with “Million Dollar Holdem: Winning Big in Limit Cash Games.” That sure is a mouthful from a poker giant.
