The Life before Fame and Glory
Greg Raymer was born in Minot, North Dakota on June 25, 1964. He had an unhappy childhood. His family would move numerous times from his birthplace to Florida and even to Missouri. He studied in the University of Missouri and finished Chemistry. His graduate studies were from the University of Missouri-Law School. For more than 10 years, he worked as a lawyer in a famous pharmaceutical company, and in 1999, his interest in poker grew stronger. And after that year, he focused his attention on being a professional poker player.
Greg Raymer’s Poker Career - His Humble Beginnings and Success
Greg Raymer started his poker career while he was still working as a patent lawyer. When their family moved to Connecticut, he started exploring his poker potentials by playing cards at Foxwoods Casino. During those moments, his main objective was to have fun, but he never realized that he will soon become a superstar.
He began participating in tournaments, and the first tournament he joined in was the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2001 where Chris Ferguson won the title. By the next year, he came close with Robert Varkonyi for the main event in WSOP. But failures didn’t stop Greg Raymer from shining. He continued to play in various poker tournaments, never considering the fact of winning or losing. In 2004, his hard work paid off. He defeated David Williams at the World Series of Poker and went home with 5 million dollars. For the record, this is Greg Raymer’s biggest winning. This was a remarkable event because he only had $160 as his tournament fee, and luckily, he got the chance to win the 2004 WSOP, alongside with 2003 winner Chris Moneymaker and 2005 winner Joseph Hachem.
Today, Greg Raymer is part of the Poker Stars Team. He has been traveling with the rest of the poker experts and had entered the biggest tournaments all over the world. His total earnings to date are estimated to be over 6 million dollars.
